Dimensions: Teachers charged with the responsibility of preparing students for the next century must themselves be well prepared to take on the task. High levels of preparation begin with quality pre-service programs and beginning teacher's standards which clearly state what teachers are expected to be able to do. High quality pre-service programs provide teachers with full understanding of national performance standards in their content areas, as well as the skills to enable students to reach them. Teachers in high performance learning communities hold certification which is appropriate to the grade level and/or content area they are teaching and are familiar with their own state's standards. They are offered professional development which is wanted, needed, and relevant to the instructional needs of their students, and they are proactive in seeking to further their own professional development through activities such as visiting other classrooms and schools, exchanging resources with other teachers, and peer coaching.
